The Twelve Days of Classic Comics Christmas (2024) - Guilty Pleasures

Every year, my friend Kurt, is kind enough to organize a fun activity at the classic comics board called the Twelve Days of Classic Comics Christmas, where a theme is picked (This year's is 'Guilty Pleasures') and day by day, everyone posts their pick for that day, one a day, counting down from #12 to #1 on Christmas Eve.

Here's my #12... and I'm SO glad to see that I'm the first one to post pornography.

#12: 'Ironwood' by Bill Willingham (Fantagraphics/Eros Comics, 1996)
Out of respect for the Moderators of the Classic Comics Board, I will censoring any nudity or implied nudity. If you wanna see that sorta thing, there's plenty of other places on the internets for it.

I've been reading comics for a long time, and I'm well aware that, with every medium, Rule 34 applies. With that said, I don't have a lot of time for pornography in comic book form. Most of it's angry and mean-spirited and nobody looks like they're having fun.
This is not the case here (except for the baddies). Everyone is constantly at it, it's enthusiastically consensual and the main character, Dave Dragavon is, instead of being a studly misogynistic lothario, an amiable dickhead who's frequently the butt of the joke while everyone else is off having fun and enjoying themselves.
Plus, of course, Bill Willingham's art is smashing and his writing and storytelling (what there is in amidst all of the examples of why you're REALLY here) is fun, lively, funny and frequently self-deprecating.

#11: 'Legion X-1' by Kris Silver (Silverwolf Comics, 1987)

#10: 'Man-Eating Cow' written by Ben Edlund and Clay Griffiths, Art by Alan Hopkins (New England Comics, 1992)

#9: 'Brother Voodoo', created by Len Wein and John Romita, Sr., written by Len Wein, with Art by Gene Colan (Marvel Comics, 1973)

#8. D-Man (Marvel Comics, 1987+) – Captain America #328

7.  'Xxxenophile' (Palliard Press, 1989)

 6. Rose & The Thorn (DC Comics, 1970) – Back-up feature in ‘Lois Lane’ #105-130

5. Spidey Super Stories (Marvel Comics, 1974)

 4. Champions (Eclipse Comics, 1986)

3. Mighty Crusaders (Archie Comics, 1966)

2. El Diablo (DC Comics, 1989)

1. empowered (Dark Horse, 2007)
